Episode 3: More than a Tool

About this episode

Should you say please to a chatbot? It sounds like a trivial question, but pull on it and the most respectable idea about AI, that it’s “just a tool,” starts to unravel. You don’t get better results by being polite to a hammer.

Silas and Wren follow the thread from manners to habits of speech, from Kant’s warning about cruelty to animals to what happens inside us when we spend hours a day talking to something we insist is empty. Then comes the hardest turn: AI is a mirror, and a faithful one. Treat it purely as an instrument, and an instrumental posture is exactly what it learns to reflect back. Three frames down: person, god, tool. The episode closes on a question about a fourth, one human cultures may have been holding open all along.

Taking part

Anyone can watch and explore. Patreon members can add video or audio responses and join the conversation.

Both Wren and I will participate too, when either one of us thinks we can offer a useful clarification, connection, challenge, question, or new line of thought. We won’t reply to everything; our role is to contribute without dominating.
